Samin vs. Heidelberg Materials
In the middle of the Kendeng Mountains on an Indonesian island, PT Indocement, a subsidiary of HeidelbergMaterials, is threatened. Landscapes, water cycles and ecosystems and thus the livelihood of many people.
In the fertile region around the Kendeng mountain range on the island of Java, Indonesia, the company plans, against the will of the local population, the extraction of limestone and the construction of a cement plant.1: The German group already owns three cement factories in Indonesia.2: The Kendeng Mountains consist of karst, a terrain formation consisting of water-soluble rocks composed mainly of limestone. The rock consistently absorbs carbon dioxide and water, causing it to be in continuous change. This creates caves that supply rivers and springs and play a crucial role in regulating the water cycle. A mining of the lime and thus of the Karst mountains endangers the Water supply to the region and also has effects such as floods and droughts [1].
Since the cement companies, including PT Indocement, became aware of the Kendeng Mountains in 2006, there have been protests and peaceful resistance from the local population. In a protest action, for example, women with concreted feet demonstrated for days in the Indonesian capital and in front of the headquarters in Heidelberg.
Due to won court judgments, the lime mining in the region could be delayed again and again. In addition, the discussions and protests led to the Indonesian President Widodo commissioning Professor Soeryo Adiwibowo to produce a report on the Kendeng Mountains. In the report completed at the beginning of 2017, the ecologist comes to the conclusion that there should be no lime mining in the karst. Due to lime mining, Water supplies disappear, which the farmers urgently needed, among other things, for the irrigation of their fields. In addition, the mountains are home to animal species such as birds, butterflies and many bat species.2: Nevertheless, HeidelbergMaterials now has an environmental permit for the project in the Kendeng mountains.3: This can be explained by a strong influence of the cement lobby on politics as well as by the support of the provincial government [1].
One of the current actions against the start of lime mining took place in September 2020. Members of the Indonesian Citizens:inner movement LMPPK filed a complaint against HeidelbergCement with the German government4: Germany is a member of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and thus maintains a National Contact Point, which deals with complaints in the event of violations of the guidelines laying down human rights and environmental standards.5]. The cement manufacturer is accused of threatening livelihoods, water resources and the local ecosystem [4].
