In addition to social and economic advantages, joint housing projects also create offers and structures that support environmentally and climate-friendly behaviors and thus contribute to environmental and resource conservation. The joint planning phase preceding the construction or renovation as well as the subsequent joint organisation of the offers and activities through the regular exchange and commitment of the residents within the projects plays an important role. The communication and decision-making structures in the projects are sometimes very different and complex. After all, residential projects and their offers not only affect their inhabitants, but also into the neighbourhood and can be a model for a climate-friendly building and lifestyle in other quarters and cities.
In the second part, we want to discuss the project Parasol and the underlying principles of the tenement house syndicate.

Building with straw? After straw was displaced for a long time by building materials such as concrete and steel, the material has been experiencing a renaissance for several years. In particular, the wood-straw-loam compound offers ecological and indoor climatic advantages. From own do-it-yourself straw bale house to the most modern prefabrication by element building, everything is possible in straw building. The lecture gives an overview of the different construction methods of straw bale houses, shows practical examples from all over the world as well as directly on site and deals with the ecological balance of straw houses.

The songs I perform are inspired by my own Wayang Rajakaya. Wayang Rajakaya is a new shadow puppet creation I have been creating since 2005. From this realisation, I created poems about these characters in Bahasa Indonesia and turned them into songs.
In general, the lyrics express certain environmental problems to which animals are also exposed. The songs are very diverse. Some sound fun, energetic or maybe sad and I try to share the story of my shadow puppets figures through them. Some lyrics tell, how humans are involved in the plight of animals, who should have the right to live as equals with us and as fellow inhabitants of planet Earth.
Through my songs I want us to better understand how serious the environmental problem, which we and the animals are facing, is. It is a wake-up call to change the way we co-exist with all the earth’s inhabitants and to stop the practices that destroy nature. Because that means destroying humanity itself.

In diesem Workshop sprechen wir über die Formen des Widerstands, insbesondere den gewaltfreien Widerstand (non-violent resistance), in den saharauischen Flüchtlingslagern. Der Kurzfilm “On the Road to Independence” leitet das Gespräch ein.
Seit mittlerweile 50 Jahren und über mehrere Generationen leben die Saharauis im Exil. 1975 flohen sie vor der marokkanischen Invasion aus ihrer Heimat, der Westsahara, in die algerische Wüste. Vor allem Frauen bauten dort Camps und ein neues Leben auf. Sie übernahmen die Verantwortung für Bildung, Gesundheit und Sicherheit, während die Männer an der Front kämpften — bis zum Waffenstillstand 1991. Jahrzehnte im Exil und doch bleibt der Kampfgeist der Saharauis bis heute ungebrochen: 50 Jahre Erfahrungen mit Widerstand, über die wir mit euch sprechen möchten. Wir freuen uns auf euch und darauf, Kämpfe miteinander zu verbinden!

Beton ist das am häufigsten verwendete von Menschenhand hergestellte Material der Welt und nach Wasser die am meisten genutzte Ressource. Von der Urbanisierung über die Mobilität bis hin zu CO2-Emissionen – Betongebäude und -infrastrukturen bilden die oft unsichtbare, aber wesentliche Grundlage der modernen Lebensweise.
Die Auswirkungen des Wachstums dieses Materials – sozial, ökologisch, ökonomisch – sind enorm, wie etwa Klimakrise, Menschenrechtsverletzungen oder Flächenversiegelung. Der Vortrag skizziert die Ausbreitung des Materials aus einer sozial-ökologischen Perspektive. Beschrieben wird eine Geschichte der Moderne als ‚Zeitalter des Betons‘ – von frühen Visionen industrialisierten Bauens bis zum 3D-Druck.
Beton wird dabei als fossiles und abstraktes Material analysiert, das eine Schlüsselrolle im Stoffwechsel kapitalistischer Gesellschaften spielt. Und es wird diskutiert, was das für eine sozial-ökologische Transformation bedeutet, nicht zuletzt aus einer Postwachstums-Perspektive.

The workshop “Extractivism in the Capitalist World: Bringing Cases of the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) and a Connection to the Cement Industry” explores the dynamics of resource extraction within global capitalist frameworks, focusing on the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) as a primary case study and its intersections with the cement industry. The event will bring together activists to examine how extractive projects drive environmental degradation, and social disruption, while highlighting broader systemic patterns.
The session will begin with an overview of extractivism, defined as the large-scale extraction of natural resources for export, often prioritizing profit over local well-being. The EACOP, a 1,443-kilometer pipeline transporting crude oil from Uganda’s Lake Albert oilfields to Tanzania’s Tanga port, is presented as a flagship example.
Nicholas Omonuk, a frontline activist; will speak about their fight against this big oil pipeline; the successes, the solidarity and the resilience they used. He also connects the project to how the cement industry is related in a great deal of aspects.
He emphasizes significant costs: displacement of over 100,000 people, threats to ecosystems like Lake Victoria and Murchison Falls National Park, and an estimated 379 million tons of CO2 emissions over 25 years, clashing with global climate goals.
The discussion will then pivot to the cement industry’s connection to EACOP.
Participants explore how oil extraction fuels cement production, a key component of infrastructure supporting extractive projects—roads, pipelines, and processing facilities. Cement manufacturing, heavily reliant on fossil fuels, mirrors extractivism’s environmental footprint, with its own emissions and resource demands (e.g., limestone mining).
He illustrates a loop where extractive industries reinforce each other, amplifying ecological and social strain.

Der Kendeng-Karst in Zentral- und Ostjava ist nicht nur ein bedeutender Lebensraum für Mensch und Natur, sondern auch ein essenzieller Wasserspeicher und Klimaschützer. Seit 2010 plant Heidelberg Materials über seine Tochtergesellschaft Indocement den Bau eines Zementwerks in Pati. Dieses Vorhaben gefährdet die Umwelt, die kleinbäuerliche Landwirtschaft und die Existenz der indigenen Gemeinschaft Sedulur Sikep.
Im Workshop geben wir einen Überblick über die Aktivitäten von Heidelberg Materials in Indonesien und beleuchten die sozialen sowie ökologischen Auswirkungen des Projekts. Zudem widmen wir uns dem Widerstand der lokalen Bevölkerung gegen die Zerstörung ihrer Lebensgrundlagen und die Natur.

Seit 50 Jahren hält Marokko die Westsahara illegal besetzt. Während die Sahrawis unter Repression oder in Flüchtlingslagern im Exil leben, machen internationale Konzerne in Zusammenarbeit mit der Besatzungsmacht Profite – darunter auch Heidelberg Materials.
Der Handel mit Phosphat, Fischereiprodukten oder die Produktion von erneuerbaren Energien finanziert die Besatzung. Und deutsche Unternehmen spielen eine Schlüsselrolle, indem sie Marokko in seinem völkerrechtswidrigen Vorgehen unterstützen. Doch was genau macht Heidelberg Materials in der Westsahara? Mit welchen Argumenten rechtfertigt das Unternehmen seine Geschäfte – und wie können wir dagegen aktiv werden?
Im Workshop schauen wir uns an, wie wirtschaftliche Interessen und Geopolitik in der besetzten Westsahara zusammenhängen und erarbeiten gemeinsam, was wir gegen die Beteiligung von Heidelberg Materials tun können.Western Sahara Resource Watch (Germany) dokumentiert die Plünderung der Westsahara und arbeitet daran Unternehmen und Regierungen für ihre Unterstützung der Besatzung zur Verantwortung zu ziehen.

Vergesellschaftung wird gerade als Sektor übergreifendes Mittel und Strategie diskutiert, um Bereiche der wirtschaftlichen und gesellschaftlichen Daseinsvorsorge den privaten Konzernen zu entreißen, zu demokratisieren und nach gemeinwohlorientierten Prinzipien neu auszurichten.
Nach dem Vorbild der Initiative Deutsche Wohnen und Co. Enteignen stellt sich die Vergesellschaftungsfrage heute auch in den anderen Bereichen essenzieller alltäglicher Versorgung. Gerade in den sogenannten wirtschaftlichen Schlüsselindustrien – von denen die Zementindustrie ein wesentlicher Teil darstellt – hat die Frage der Vergesellschaftung bereits eine deutlich längere Geschichte und wurde bereits in den Nachkriegsjahren als Mittel für eine gemeinwirtschaftliche Umstrukturierung diskutiert.
In diesem Workshop schauen wir uns an, wieso wir für eine radikale und ökologische Bauwende die Eigentumsfrage stellen müssen: Wir wollen diskutieren, was Vergesellschaftung im Kontext der Zementindustrie – und konkret in Bezug auf den Zementriesen Heidelberg Materials – eigentlich heißen kann.

Workshop von Students for Palestine Heidelberg
Seit nunmehr als eineinhalb Jahren hat sich die Deutsche Klimabewegung von der Internationalen Klimabewegung isoliert, indem sie sich geweigert hat die Ungerechtigkeit in Palästina und den Genozid in Gaza anzuerkennen und anzuprangern. In diesem Workshop wollen wir gemeinsam erarbeiten, weshalb diese Entscheidung gegen die Ziele der Klimabewegung selbst geht, und weshalb Klima und soziale Gerechtigkeit untrennbar von einander sind.
Wir wollen erforschen, weshalb Forderungen nach Klimaschutz nicht genug sind, weshalb ein internationales Netzwerk an Aktivist*innen und Gruppen nötig sind, und weshalb wir uns der globalen Solidarität für Gerechtigkeit anschließen müssen für eine lebenswerte Zukunft.
Wir werden erarbeiten wie genau wir hier in Deutschland, spezifisch Heidelberg, mit dem Kampf um Klima und Gerechtigkeit in Palästina verbunden sind.

Gibt es eine Alternative zum Hamsterrad aus reiner Gewinn- und Wachstumslogik? Die Gemeinwohl-Ökonomie (GWÖ) hat dafür einen konkreten Ansatz entwickelt. Das Ziel ist „ein gutes Leben für alle, für Mensch und Umwelt“. Bei diesem Workshop werden die Grundlagen der GWÖ kurz vorgestellt und gemeinsam erarbeiten wir, wie aus Sicht der GWÖ ein Umbau der Zement-Industrie / HD Materials ablaufen könnte.
